Oaks try to form a tap root quickly, and don't transplant, well. If you keep them somewhere other than where you plan to plant them out, make sure it is a deep container, and be careful of the taproot when you transplant.
I have lots of oaks, and get lots of seedlings every year that I have to remove from my lawn, my garden, and my flower beds. The nut just melts away as the root is formed - very quickly.
I'd be happy to give away acorns if anyone wants them. I have white oak acorns, and mixed black/scarlet/hybrid black-scarlet acorns. This is the season.
