Lon is right if there are suckers. all my good filberts are grafted to tree hazels to delete suckering. I have no more problem with grasfting filberts than any other graft.

Most hazelnuts are own rooted and it's much easier to dig suckers than try
to graft (which is HARD with hazelnuts). Commercial propagation is with
suckers, too.

It will work if it gets cold enough. I find it easier to put in zip lock
bags with little damp peat moss, or just in a zip lock bag and in the bottom
drawer of the fridge till the ground is warm enough to plant. But you may be
disappointed to wait till they produce and find that you don't have anything
like what was planted. Best way is to graft scions from that bush come
spring and reproduce what you know is good. Only way to be sure.

Has anyone had success planting freshly harvested hazelnuts in trays or
tubes & leaving them in
an unheated greenhouse for the winter? My son pointed out hazel that we had
forgotten to pick
last week & it turns out to have overly large (up to a third larger than the
majority of other
varieties I have) nuts. Unfortunately the rabbits ate that particular ID
tag so Im unclear
what it is, but I do know that the bush is about 3 years old & gave me about
a half gallon of
husked nuts. mIEKAL
