Gang:

Additonal commentary on the various threads about Newtown/Albemarle Pippin.

First Don Yellman gave you accurate information, kudos to Mr. Yellman.
The Newtown Pippin is htought to stem from the NY estate of one Gershom (sp?)
Moore of Newtown Long Island.

Don also wrote:

The story goes that it then became the most popular export apple to England,
because of its high quality and ability to withstand the rigors of long sea
voyages without much deterioration.

My reply:

As an FYI the qualities you attribute do exist, however the real reason for
the fact the Newtown Pippin became a popular export apple was due to Benjamin
Franklin's diplomacy and salesmanship. It is a long and interesting story
involving religion, economics, political intrigue, duplicity and the
ex-patriation of undesirable though prominante English families to the
Americas.

Inother words although the Newtown Pippin was a delicious long keeping apple,
the reason it became a popular export really had nothing to do with those
qualities and everything to do with politics and the balance of trade.

As an FYI Newport Rhode Island is famous for the Rhode Island Greeening noted
in the 1600's.

All the best,

little ol' me...
