Dear Group,

Low chill is a somewhat relative concept, with North Carolina getting
many more chill hours than Houston, Texas, for example. Here we generally
average about 450 chill hours. Beverly Hills, which was mentioned, also
works here but is a small red apple needing a pollinator and in recent years
seems to have disappeared from our area. Anna is much larger as is Dorsett
Golden, the latter needing only 200 chill hours or some feel even less.
Mutsu works well here also and Fuji and Royal Gala occasionally work, really
needing at least 500-600 hours. Pink Lady, which has been sold at our local
nurseries with tags claiming it requires 450 chill hours, will not fruit
here and only has a few flowers each year. It must actually need at least
600 chill hours. We have one called Hungarian, which was never released by
Stark Nursery from whence it originally came as a test plant and which gives
good size and a nice red color, even with our heat. Many of the earlier
Israeli apples such as Slor and Einsheimer work here but are no useful
quality.

Regards, Ethan
