Jim, last year was the first time I had ever seen more than a couple of
the sap deposits (maybe there is frass there somewhere} as evidence of
the borers.
There were more that hundred on my Early Goldens and John Ricks. The
trees native to this area (north eastern SC 5 miles from the NC border)
didn't seem to have as many as these northern varieties. These effected
trees are 8 to 10 years old. I tried to find the borers by probing but
couldn't find them.
I know that plums, peaches and pecans are frequently invaded in this
area by borers and Imidan is used to control them. Occasionally some
oaks show evidence of a borer.
The persimmons showed no signs of being weakened by this sudden endemic
of borers. Clay colored beetles sometimes just about defoliate my
persimmons but they keep producing and thriving. So I guess we had
better just leave our persimmons alone rather than kill something else
with the pesticides. I imagine that the tree harvesters will be
disappointed in the quality of of the lumber when we are gone.
