We've got quite a few hawthorns growing and bearing and are generally
pleased with the fruits. The Mayhaws are the first to bear, are quite
attractive in bloom and fruit. There are occasional rust galls on stems,
fruits or foliage, but not enough to worry about. We find the fruit makes a
fine jelly, but think it would also be good in a sauce. Tastes a lot like
sweet and sour sauce used in Chinese foods. Azarole bears late in the year
and makes a milder flavored jelly. Also quite pretty in bloom. Again
occasional rust, but not serious enough to worry about needing control. By
the way, we're in a very humid, narrow valley with limited air circulation.
easily gets into the 90s in summer.
The Chinese haws gave us more disease problems. They are also fall
bearing, although not so late as the Azarole. Fruits are the largest of all
haws. More rust on some varieties and serious damage to twigs with the
galls, also on fruits. Still worth growing because of the excellent flavor.
Would be great mixed with applesauce. I've tried the leather, that Donna
mentioned, but these taste better than that.
Richard Fahey does send scionwood of the Cherry Haw that he has up
there. We've grafted it to one of those thorny wild ones. No fruit yet.
Might mention that hawthorne is used as heart medecine in Europe and
possibly also Asia. Fruits and leaves both contain the chemical. and I
believe all haws contain it.
