Tom,
Very interesting article, and very well written, the author allows you
to try to figure it out along with him as one reads the article.
Marvin Harris is my favorite enterpreter of human behavior, glad to
see he's a source. I highly recommend that you all take the time to
read it, its quite an intriquing read.
Funny though, you'd think that the production of cider would actually
be more . . . well, there's no other word- "technoenvironmentally"
efficient than beer, being that barley yields so poorly in comparison
and requires so many more calories to produce. But the problem of
transporting the apples to the city to have it processed may counter
the efficiency of orcharding to some extent.
I kind of think that hard cider has fallen out of favor more due to
his theory of the common man's identification with the poor German and
Irish immigrants (beer and . . . whiskey or rum was it) as opposed to
the Anglo Saxon Protestants traditional preference for hard cider.
Perhaps somewhere along the line, after the Temperance period, hard
cider was associated with not only the WASPs but the Brits as well,
too "la- dee- da for our frontier values. Course, we had associated
hard cider as being so essentially American too, log cabins and hard
cider, before the Temperance. I guess it makes sense that the WASP's
involvement in Temperance may be the connection to the falling out of
hard cider. Then again, as he said, probly is a combination of lots of
things all at once.
But, come to think of it, I'm German and Irish, maybe I should be
trying my hand at beer brewing instead. But I'll tell ya, the hard
cider I just had, dry, light, it tastes as good as any wine I've had,
(including the 50.00 bottle I once had bought for me).
Woodpecker and Woodchuck to my tastes, and I'm sorry if I offend
anyone, is like cheap wine, in fact, well, worse, I really hate the
stuff, it gives me a headache and tastes like bad soda pop. I am very
pleased to see that real English cider is so very good. I think there
is a huge market potential for real English cider. First you have to
grow the right apples though.
Thanks for the link Tom!
