Hi Phil, (still have the Emerson square grand) At our annual Fruit and
Vegetable Meeting last week, Bill Lord, the UNH Fruit Specialist advised to
continue wrapping longer than that. Apparently, the bark is edible on older
trees than it would seem. Maybe it also depends on what else is
available. I just can't get over why I would have this problem so early, when
last year under identical (to me) circumstances I had no damage and the
nursery was hardly protected. This fall girdling totals more than the past
six years combined!
Bill also advised in his lecture on the orchard floor, to not till or mulch,
but only to mow down the leaves to prevent carrying over fungus and
disease to the following spring.
On his recommendation, I will make an effort to inarch this month and if they
fail, I can redo in the spring. ...........vic
