Lon,
This surely is a point. I would also add that there are dozens of hawthorn
species and maybe only some of them will be compatible for pear rootstock.
One other problem is that it is very difficult to identify hawthorn
species. So if I say that, here in Quebec, from my experience, such and
such a pear appear compatible with the local wild hawthorns, this data
might not be useful to someone else unless the same hawthorn species are
used...

My best result yet is with a very good local pear called Ste-Sophie,
grafted at about 2 ft high on a hawthorn. This tree is now fruiting for the
third year. The problem is that the pear is outgrowing the hawthorn, being
about twice as big - the graft union looks quite wierd...
