I tried to put an unidentified 'flat-bottomed' pear on hawthorn this
spring, and it didn't take. I don't know if the failure was due to
incompatibility or just the fact that I sometimes have problems bringing
scionwood from south Alabama in February and getting it to stay dormant
long enough to graft in April, here in KY. I did manage to get one take of
that pear, fostered onto a young Keiffer tree, but it (the scion) was well
on its way to pushing growth when I grafted it, and it still doesn't look
too great.
