A few years ago the California Rare Fruits Growers (CRFG) was exploring
the possibility of expanding the circulation of its flagship publication
the "Fruit Gardener" to include members of the Florida "Rare Fruit
Council, International" (RFCI).

Obviously this would have substantial economic benefits to both
organizations if the editorial content could be appealing to fruit
growers residing southern tip of Florida grow more tropical fruits.
Florida actually has climates that allow subtropical and even low chill
temperate fruits to be easily grown.

The CRFG membership ranges from mild winters along the coast that allow
subtropical fruits to be grown to interior climates in Northern
California that excel in growing temperate fruits, berries, and nuts,
and the dessert climates that grow dates, figs, and mangoes. California
lacks a tropical climate found in Southern Florida.

My analysis pointed out that the CRFG had more in common with the NAFEX
than the tropical fruit growers in Florida. The CRFG has increased dues
in an effort to hire a paid editorial staff, but they have not merged
publications with the RFCI. I understand this is due to the complexity
of the financial and editorial negotiations that remain unresolved.

A problem common to all of the fruit growing organizations is that as
volunteer organizations, they lack the coordination and long term
planning of professional publishing organizations.

I still have some of the information posted at
http://members.home.net/sweetent/proposal.html
if anyone would like to see how I approached the problem.

http://members.home.net/sweetent/proposal.html details the staff
necessary to publish a quality publication six to 12 times a year. A
similar staff is necessary to publish a quality
horticultural book like the NAFEX handbook.

It is much more difficult to attempt such a project if the people
involved are not using a computer to its full advantage, including daily
email communications to coordinate and revise articles, and printing
directly from desktop publishing software files to reduce proofing
galley sheets.
