Two caveats on spiral guards:

1) If left on the tree forevernever, in many cases girdling will result as the tree girth increases.

2)  Tissue under the spiral wrap is blanched and is kept moist.  Under these conditions, latent burrknots expand and extend rapidly.   If there are enough burrknots involved around the trunk and if they expand laterally enough, girdling results.  These burrknots are often attacked by dogwood borer and plum borer.     There is some evidence, howbeit inconclusive, that the tissues covered by the wrap never become as winter-hardy as the exposed trunk tissue.

Some spiral bands  have a few perforations, which somewhat reduce the problems.

Spiral bands for rabbit control?  Helpful -- but with caution. There are better alternatives.

The spiral plastic tree wraps that are sold specifically for fruit
