There were several accounts of topgrafting apples to increase
hardiness. I had one experience that suggested that the tree used
for its frame may influence whether the grafted varieties bear
annually or biennially.

I had a 5 year old Sylvia frame tree with 6 other varieties whip
and tongue grafted 3 to 5 feet above the ground. I left one branch
of the Sylvia as well. Sylvia bears annually. Osman tends to bear
biennially. The Osman branch topworked on Sylvia bore annually, as
did all the other branches on this 7 in 1 tree.

I still have never tried the reverse. Grafting an annual bearing
apple scion onto a biennial bearing tree.
