I have found that after the skins have softened a little bit, taking the
walnuts out on the street (preferably not busy)and rolling them on the
macadam under a shoe (with a rubber sole and heel) works well. Sneakers
work pretty well; boots with lugged soles-vibram-work real well. The macadam
and the bottom of your shoe will get stained, but your hands will be saved.
