Does anyone know about training a horse to scent or even if it can be done?
Ruthie From: hosenfefer72@hotmail.com To: msar-riders@lists.ibiblio.org Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2013 22:16:19 +0000 Subject: Re: [MSAR] MSAR Rider 10 Essentials List Team
The intent of the rider essentials list is to show what we think the essential items that we should have on our person if we were to ever get separated from our horse and have to survive for a period of time. (It is also a good baseline to get teams who have not thought about it to start thinking about how to prepare for this possible scenario.) The list is like the SARTECH II list: you need everything on the list for certification but can modify it for the region as necessary when out on a search. Your input on what items you think should be on the list is important and valued. T'mi has made a lot of huge strides for us as MSAR teams in the last few years within NASAR. We have the opportunity here to show the other SAR communities what we are all about at a national level. By establishing the MSARTECH III certification and the rider essentials, we are laying the groundwork to benefit teams all over. Some teams will benefit more than others from this framework depending on their experience levels and if they are still working to build relationships with their local AHJs. Here is my input for the list: 1 One first aid kit 2 One lightweight rain poncho or a large plastic leaf bag3 One 20 ounce bottle of water orwater bladder 4 Water purifying tablets 5 Fire Starter 6 One multi-tool or knife of some sort 7 One Compass with signaling mirror 8 One whistle 9 Two small flashlights 10 High energy food (trail mix/energy bars/etc.) So you know how I picked priority, I used the general rule of 3s: 3 minutes without air/bleeding(ie. arterial) 3 hrs without shelter 3 days without water 3 weeks without food R/ Tracy Cartwright www.ngmsar.org From: tfinkle@erols.com To: msar-riders@lists.ibiblio.org Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2013 08:38:15 -0400 Subject: [MSAR] MSAR Rider 10 Essentials List Howdy folks, I am seeking input from our group of experienced MSAR Riders for assistance developing the NASAR Mounted SAR Tech-III, 10 Essentials list that will be carried by a mounted searcher. It is likely this list will be commonly accepted as the (minimum) uniformed baseline, for what is carried on the MSAR responder. We are also looking at the list with the items order of importance, so please feel free to provide comments. If you would like to substitute something on this , please suggest what to remove.
NOTE: This list does not to replace the SAR pack and/or gear that is commonly carried on the horse, but is the 10 essentials to be carried by a rider while on a SAR Mission or during training. Ten Essentials List are being developed for most specialty SAR responders
1. One 20 ounce bottle of water or water bladder 2. One lightweight rain poncho or a large plastic leaf bag 3. One space blanket 4. Two energy bars 5. Fire Starter 6. One basic first aid kit 7. One folding knife or multi-tool 8. One whistle 9. One Compass 10. Two small flashlights
PS: Please think of this list as if a horse returned to the Command Post without its rider. The IC will have some knowledge of what items will be in possession of the rider, which will aid determining with a survivability factor of the missing rider (the term rider is used since the responder would become another missing subject of the mission) Thank you,
