I suspect it may be especially hard for horses that have had bad past experiences with being put into chutes, racing or otherwise, to want to be loaded into any kind of box. I at first thought is was just a thoroughbred or appendix QH issue, but we had to work to build trust and confidence in our your draft cross probably due to a previous scare he had before we purchased him. The draft had not been many places or in trailers much either. We use trailers because it is convenient for us and the safest way we know.
