the mirror is part of the topo navigating tools, compass it's not just to find the north..... a good $30 compass has everything you need for the job, sure you can buy $300 compass, but it will not do a better job....

The price range for a compass is not $30; it is hundreds of dollars.
On http://www.thecompassstore.com/sighting-compasses.html the range
is about $800 ($22.50 to $819).

On some of the more expensive compasses the user looks in the mirror
to read the dial in the "usual" manner, or does a mental conversion.
This confuses many users who are far more familiar with the standard
baseplate compass.
