Unless you are looking for a mil-spec cast iron unit you can obtain a decent
compass for as little as $10 (well maybe with inflation, $30). The features
to look for are liquid damping or liquid filled, a needle that won't come
off the bearing or pivot, a clear base, and a lanyard hole. Check REI or
Eastern Mountain Sports on - line.
