Hi Chris,

I agree!  Our Posse bought this tape and we practice this 2 or 3 times a summer together.  Not only is it "fun" to get together and practice our self defense on horseback but it gives our group a chance to see what our horses need, if anything except freshening up but we also combine it with our defense tactics on the ground. It is good to know despite what other people might say.  I can't think of any mounted policeman that  hasn't started with the basics for him and his mount.  In addition, people do get way within 20 feet of your "unit" so it's better to have some kind of plan than none.  And besides, you can't just draw your weapon because somebody came close to your horse.  That's ludicrous!   Scot is a retired mounted officer himself so he should know what he is talking about.  I hope to have our group attend one of his clinics if he gets close enough to our region.

Have a great day and keep up the good work.  Thanks for sharing that info.

Yes, Irv- but if you are just trail riding, on a narrow and very well treed trail- you might need to know this stuff. Not all of us are, or were, cops! :-)

The best defense is the good sense not to let anyone get within lunging distance.  No cop would let a person get that close, and cops have guns.

The second defense is your horse.  You can swing into the offender, outrun him, or even run over him.  Also, be ready for your horse to make a move

on his own in self defense.

In Pennsylvania you just arrest the idiot.  It is a felony to harass a search horse, on or off duty, 24/7, and that means a ranger can use deadly

force to stop him even if us civilians can’t.

This short video gives a pretty decent overview of how to react if someone on the ground is harassing you.

Good reminder!

Cheers,
Chris
