An MSAR volunteer here in New Mexico is also a senior manager with one of the
largest personal insurance companies in the United States. This volunteer has
advised many of us to obtain "umbrella" personal liability insurance, and for
SAR units to obtain liability insurance to protect their unit assets and their
officers' personal assets.

Many SAR units have no signficant assets, but a few do. Significant assets
are fairly common in older MSAR units that were organized as a sheriff's posse
or sheriff's mounted patrol. During the 1940's and 50's many of them were
given parcels of county land that is now valuable. In some cases it is worth
many millions of dollars.

E.S., does your sheriff's department insurance policy cover your personal
liabiity as an officer or member of the MSAR unit? Please look into that and
share with us what you learn. Remind us what state you are in, or better
look into your state's Good Samaritan statutes (if any) and report on them to
us.

Thanks,

Una Smith
