I have 5 SAR horses, 1 ATV, 1 boat that I have available.
Horses are a direct cost of feed, vet, food, and such
Truck is based on mileage
Trailer, get this IRS allowed me to write off 50% of vehicle mileage deduction
(it has less moving parts) thus smaller deduction
The actual costs for searches based on receipts.
Gear...

Last years deduction was a whopping $17,000 +/- for me as hard costs.

So, yes it costs a lot to volunteer

Anybody ever figure out what it costs to volunteer? Using boarding fees as a basis it costs between $3600 and $4800 a year

to keep a horse, plus vets and farriers. Insurance on the horse (liability) is around another $300. Inspecting, registering, and insuring the trailer adds about $200.

A ¾ ton truck to haul it and repairs?? How about a set of tires for the trailer at $700 a set? Monthly training hauls, in between riding and conditioning, not just tack but other personal equipment for all weather riding……………………

It may be tax deductible if you are a member of a properly organized SAR unit but I run close to $6000 a year base line or fixed overhead.  And my hourly rate is $150/hour for consultation.
