Call me a wimp, but I learned not to take
unnecessary risks long ago.

That's nice until you are called on to save a life and your horse hasn't been
trained to be flexible and adaptable in all situations.

You missed the point David, and left out half my comment. All of our horses
are very well trained and flexible. I have been a mounted Ranger for 20
years (Sgt. for 10), and head up a 40 member mounted ERT comprised of
mounted police and non-commissioned volunteers.
Any horse can turn in a tight spot if the rider has a clue what they're
doing.
The point is, a good leader of a mounted team needs to make sure his people
aren't being assigned to areas which would be safer for foot searchers to
cover. Believe it or not, we have some pretty rough terrain here in
Cuyahoga and Lake County (I can here you folks out west laughing...)
In my experience, the Incident Commanders in mutual aid search situations
don't know how the mounted can be best used, so we try to educate them about
that in our area of northern Ohio.
