I do not feed while trailering, however, since horses are grazers and meant
to eat 20+ hours a day, I always keep hay hanging in front of them when they
are tied at the destination point. I feel it is only fair, since they are
going to be doing all the work.

I am not yet a member of a MSAR for there isn't one anywhere remotely near
us. I am interested, just not able to drive 200 miles for a meeting. Not
feasible. If needed, just call, I will do what ever is needed.

Hope all had Merry Christmas (I am refuse to be politically correct) and a
Happy New Year!

I never feed hay in the trailer. I am too concerned about the amount of
dust, and when they are riding in a two horse straight load they can't lower
their noses sufficiently to clear their sinuses. If they are in a slant, I
wouldn't want to hang a hay bag and have them get either a foot or halter
caught in
it. I find that they aren't going to starve before you get there, and chances
are that you will have some time waiting once you get there before you get
deployed on a search.

OK, I have missed something? Since when did horses not eat weeds? Mustangs
only ate the sweetest grasses made of bermuda etc? I feed bermuda/orchard
mix out of a neighbors pasture and it has weeds, albeit no sticker bushes
etc. My horses love it and are fairly very well on it. Sometimes I think we
are taking horses away from what they have known for thousands of years.
Natural food, pastureland and open areas to roam. No wonder they crib, they
are miserable. I know how they feel, since I used to work in an office. I
could see my self as a mustang mare who has been captured and stuck into a
stall. I could see the outdoors, smell the outdoors, but couldn't touch the
outdoors. But alas, we have chosen our lives...do our horses choose theirs?

Take care all, just a non arguementative thought...

Here is a company that sells the certified weed free
from Mountain Sunrise Feed at
http://www.mountainsunrise.com/ it is a very good feed
for regular feedings also, here it cost about 7.70 for
a 50 lbs bag, but this saves me money in the long run
for my 1000 lbs horses she gets 4lbs of the pellet
which come in different mixes I use the
Bermuda/alfalfa and 1 lbs of safe choice per feeding
and it averages out to about $45-50 a month per horse
and with the safe choice I don't have to add any other
supplements to the feed, right now during the winter
the horses get the 5 lbs mix in the morning and a 5
lbs flake at night still cost about the same and I
will do a change during the summer and they get the
flake in the morning and the pellet at night and the
800-900 lbs horses gets 3 lbs of pellet and 1 lbs of
safe choice per feeding unless they are going to have
a work out that day I will add 1 lbs more of the safe
choice to the morning feeding and the horses do really
well

It is not that the horses won't eat it, it is just that some land managers
don't want weeds or worse invasive plants in their neatly manicured fields.
In one state park the brambles are so bad that a volunteer uses a tractor
mounted brush hog to open trails each season, the brambles are not native to
the region and the volunteers can't cut them out fast enough. Don't know how
they got there but we sure don't want them now. It is weed seed going
through that weed free seeks to avoid. The alternative is
diapers...............
