- Subject: [Market-farming] vegetative barriers
- Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2012 03:59:43 -0700 (PDT)
We are considering installing some vegetative barriers in our vegetable field, primarily against wind erosion. We are working with the local nrcs office. They are pushing us to do this and are recommending switchgrass, though we are also considering elderberry and a few other options. I have no experience with vegetative barriers and am hesitant because of inconveniences and costs. Does anyone have any experience with these? I would be very interested in talking with you and hearing your thoughts.
It is recommended that we have a 5' tall barrier spaced
every 50'. This could greatly affect my growing practices and it raises some concerns. This would mean we would need to adjust our tillage practices. it would add shade. It would severely limit visibility across the fields.
Of coarse, there are great benefits - wind and water erosion control, though we don't have a problem with water erosion.
Thanks,
Aaron
