Let's just say it's a great deal in almost mint condition. We've seen
a bunch of junky rakes - busted reels, no teeth, stripped gears, bent frames,
sloppy axles, priced at $500. This one is priced at $150 and it has none
of those problems. It's just missing two caps. I couldn't touch a
more modern rake for less than 10x that amount. I'm also very intrigued
with the idea that this is a ground-driven implement rather than PTO driven,
which frees up the power supply we can use to pull it. For that matter, I
could pull it with my truck's bumper tow bar. If it was really beat up, or
newer machines with such a light power requirement were easier to come by, I'd
skip it. But this particular rake has so many advantages, I'm just trying
to decide if the missing parts are enough of a disadvantage to outweigh
them. But your point is well taken - sometimes newer and more expensive to
buy is cheaper in the long run. Food for thought.

The other option IF this item is going to be an actual working part of your business is to upgrade to something that has a reliable part supply. I know that may come across as a bit smart-arsed, but it is a certain reality we all must face when determining the usefulness of equipment. Heck, we run to F2 Gleaners which are are old and cumbersome enough to question their value but the part supply for these things are amazing. Heck, we can still purchase entire working machines for less than the cost of my '99 Subaru and strip them for parts. When parts get hard to find our costly we might move up to an M and ditch the Fs for scrap. |
