I might be wrong, but ...

My understanding is that the hardiness zone system do not incorporate
summer temperature, it's only based on the lowest winter temperature.
For people like me who grows mostly annual vegetable *during the
summer*, that's not terribly useful. I am more interested in the number
of degree-day and the frost-free period of the growing season.

I guess, if you have an orchard, or are growing raspberries or
blueberries, or any other perennials that overwinter for that matter,
than the hardiness zone does matter indeed.
