Lettuce is day-length sensitive. On our farm, transplants put in around the solstice will mature in 3 weeks, given good weather and moisture. We transplant our last unprotected outdoor lettuce around 8/20 (we’re zone 4b/5). These will mature around Oct. 1st and hold 10 days or more in the field (barring a very hard freeze). That’s about double the time to maturity. Unseasonably warm weather definitely speeds things in the fall, but all things being equal (temp, moisture, fertility), total sunlight hours seem to be the biggest factor.
