Here's a link to a multi-state research initiative on biodegradable mulches (BDM, to those in the know, apparently).
Annette Wszelaki at U-Tenn presented at the Kentucky Veg Growers Conference on the project. It sounds extensive,
looking at break-down products in the soil, etc. in addition to what BDMs get the best results. The downside right
now is that it's a multi-year study and only has one year under it's belt.
