The cost per acre here in the mid west is varied from 240 an acre to a high of 400 per acre, depending on the  area and the greed of the Corp bidders.  I personally work with a couple of groups of urban growers and help by letting  them use equipment and other resources.  Most of the places that they are growing are in vacant lots that the city's own, and they rent this space out for a $1 a year( but they never have collected any rent so far).  One of the gals is doing 5 vacant lots and Chris and Lori is working with 6 lots.  We are working together on a composting project and they come out and use our equipment as need be, and they help around here once in a while.  In the process of trying to find a location for them to put up a hoop house, but the city hasn't been to receptive so far, but one of the Parks and Rec gal is on the same page now so we are hoping to get one started this spring.

We have a very strong regional foods group in our area and every year we get more people on board and this is really helping to get more local foods to our schools, hospitals, and universities. The summer school programs feed a lot of kids so look at their programs for some summer sales, has proved to help make a  good working relationship with growers for the long term.
