I do not know all the details of how it works, but, a couple of markets I sell at have a card reader that works like an ATM.  The market manager then gives the customer $5 and $1 tokens for them to use at the market.  We return them to the manager and they credit our bank accounts minus a 3% fee.  The program may be through the Dept. of Ag and Markets/Farmers Market Federation.  Perhaps another NY grower can comment on this.

I think customers at Farmers Markets are sometimes surprised they can actually do their entire grocery shopping there and realize they don't have enough cash on hand.  Our market gets a lot of customers who are visiting the ocean for the weekend...We are on the coast in Delaware.  They are coming to their weekend homes or taking vacation and they often do not have ready cash at 8 a.m. on Sat. morning.  I take checks and can't take credit cards, but it would help greatly if I could or if the market could.  They have to walk three or four blocks to find an ATM and although some do, many just leave the market and don't bother to come back in.

I think it would further the cause of farmers and the farmers market if we could offer customers more ways to pay.  Money is one exchange, credit cards are one exchange, debit cards are one exchange and checks are one exchange--barter is also an exchange that is frequently used at our market among the vendors themselves. The more I can accomodate various payment modalities, the more business I will do and the better able I will be to encourage the sale and consumption of healthy local food.  And I'm all for that.
