I trellised Sun Jewel, PMR Delicious and Athena this season in a high tunnel. All were grown on a 12" spacing and trellised using string and ag-clips. A fair amount of pruning was required. Fruit quality was good. I'm not sure yet if the additional labor required for pruning and trellising really pays. I'm located in central NY, Zone 5-6.

The recent post about Sun Jewel melons prompts me to inquire if anyone has any positive (or negative) experience to report with any specialty melon (or standard muskmelon/cantaloupe) varieties...especially from a northern perspective (in terms of length of season). I am in southern Wisconsin and am looking to grow more melons next year and would like to try some new, unique varieties that might find favor with chefs. Thanks. Also, does anyone have experience with trellising melons? I trellis my Japanese cucumbers with great success and was thinking I might try trellising melons to save on space. Given the trellis idea, I'm looking for smaller sized varieties that set lots of fruit per plant. Thanks.
