You may have had a fungal disease, downy mildew. Under those conditions
resistance weaknesses will show up.

I planted Bellstar from Johnny's and was disappointed. The heads did
not seem uniform and were smaller than i would have liked. It rained
a lot here in Kansas City. When i split open up the head many of the
inner flowers were brownish black like they had some mould or
something. I tossed them. I think i'll get a different variety next
time.
