List:
I thought I'd post this for anyone trolling the list
considering/planning to start growing.
I hatched this scheme late last
summer to quit my real job and start farming. And so I did, on about 2
acres of leased and borrowed land (actually, weed patches).
Anyway,
Friday I harvested greens (spinach, arugula, kale and leaf broccoli) for my
first market yesterday. Before I even got done processing on Friday, I
had 3 small commercial orders (2 restaurants, and a small produce market)
mainly by word of mouth and some sampling efforts earlier in the
week.
I took six coolers of greens ($3 for 6 oz bag) to the opening
farmer's market yesterday and sold out in 3 1/2 hours grossing $200.
Folks were eager customers. I believe I could have easily doubled my
take if I'd brought more product to market. (I slightly regretted
selling arugula at wholesale the day before as I was more than doubling that
price at the market with only slightly more handling). It probably
helped that I was basically the only vendor with produce to sell.
It's
a small, but encouraging success, and I'm still in the hole by thousands of
dollars, but my first two days of revenue sure were satisfying.
I've
learned lots from this list and I sure appreciate the community of folks
willing to share.
