Pollination won’t affect flavor of the resulting fruit in peppers. The fruit tissue is developed solely from mother plant tissue. The pollen will only impact seed tissue, particularly endosperm. Sweet corn is the only veg crop I can think of whose harvested portion quality is affected by the pollen donor.

The exception is that many fruits have multiple pollen sources for multiple seeds. The size of the fruit is then affected by the thoroughness of pollination. Fewer pollinated seeds results in smaller fruit size. That’s one reason cross-pollinated crops, like cucumbers and melons, need to have beehives located nearby.

Hello growers,

I am looking for some guidance as to whether planting hot peppers and sweet peppers close together with potential for cross pollination  can affect the flavor of the peppers grown. In other words, will I get hot sweets and sweet hots?  I understand that peppers usually self pollinate, but can be crossed by insects.

I am not yet growing for market, but refining my growing techniques and trying to learn. I am thinking about marketing a hot sauce - seems like a good value added product.

Thanks in advance
Nancy in Corvallis Oregon
