My advice is get an el Cheepo from someplace local where you can check them over to be sure you don’t get a bad one.  A lot of cheep max-mins are so mis-labeled that the mercury level reads out to something different on the two sides!

I've had quality issues with every type since I lost a fine old steel min/max ten years ago.  The digital models work well for awhile until humidity or clumsiness does them in. My current solution is an el Cheapo plastic min/max thermometer from   growerssupply.com.  I buy them in multiples for several locations in different buildings.  Would love to know about better options for this indispensable tool also.
