I'd like to second the idea of using Open Office.  It really does give
you everything that Microsoft Office does.

My planting plans are very simple.  I don't need anything complicated.
So, Open Office spreadsheets have worked for me.

Another standby might be Google Docs.  It's not as full featured, but if
you use Google Docs, you don't even have to install any software...you may
have heard of the term "cloud computing".  That's Google Docs.

crazy!

Nothing against Excel, but no need to buy even it if you don't already
have it for some other reason. I use Open Office and for most things it is
just as capable. There are a few shortcomings that I've run up against, but
nothing dire, yet. I don't use it for super complicated things, though.
There are also various other free spreadsheet programs, but they aren't
all file compatible with Microsoft Office, which Open Office is pretty
good at.

Alison - jinx!! :)
