As our season begins to wind down, I've been thinking about what I will and won't grow for next year, and thinking particularly about high and low points in this year's seed choice. My favorite item I grew this year were F1 sun jewell Asian melons from Johnnys. We grew them in the greenhouse, on clip and twine trellising, and they are the best melon I've ever eaten. They started producing in May, and are still going (although certainly slower now, and some mildew problems). Our farmer's market sales of these have been pretty good, and once people have had one they come back for more. We were selling them for $2/ piece (each melon is usually around 2-3 lbs?). We've grown them in the field this year and in the past, and they were barely worth eating. I think they are
getting too much moisture outside, but the greenhouse seems to really suit them well. The low point for me this year was a row of cucumbers, which I thought were supposed to be Burpless 26. I expected something similar to Marketmore, or sweet slice, but these were huge, and often mishapen. Flavor was fine, but difficult to sell because they were too big. I'm wondering if I got the wrong label, or if this is what they are usually like. I was also hoping others would share their favorite variety of the year, and perhaps any outstanding failures as well.
Thanks,
Curtis
