Sounds a little goofy, but there may be some truth to it. Copper is the most
common, and basic, algicide. So if it leachs off some copper hydroxide while
water moves through it, it may do the trick. I suspect it may not work under
all circumstances though. I believe the standard treatment is sulfuric acid.
