You might want to look into aquaponics. The setup is similar to hydroponics, but it is definately a lot 'dirtier', and works like a natural system. It cycles fish water through gravel growbeds. Bacteria in the growbeds convert fish waste to a form plants can use, and returns the cleaned water to the fish tank.

I like it because, by it's very nature, it's organic...can't use anything that would hurt the fish. Once it's set up, it pretty much runs itself, and it can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make it. I have had problems with mold, algae clogging the pipes, bugs, etc., but I'm basically a dirt farmer and prefer those sorts of problems to the chemical problems of a 'sterile' hydroponic system.

I have been helping a school start a no-till organic garden. Now they
are applying a for a grant doing hydroponics. Are there hydroponic
systems that use various beneficial microorganisms to feed the
plants? I must admit to some prejudice about avoiding soil to produce
plants but have a small window of open mindedness on the subject. I
know most are busy but experience or references i would be appreciated.
