Thank you for this link. I spent some time reading through some of them.  I am pretty sure that would be very hard for me to keep up with.  I am a middle school math and science teacher. I have a family of four girls and my wife works at an university.  We all work very hard to make a living, as do most.  We almost qualify for state health care for our kids, because teachers don't make very much.  I market garden to make ends meet and so we can have a small savings, make changes/remodel our old home and make our life easier financially.  We have no credit card debt and don't live an extravagant lifestyle.

However, our "Nanny" government wants to take away my market gardening.  Ok, they aren't taking it away they are just making so many regulations that it makes it impossible to do.  I really makes me upset.  That is all I can say.  Why does the small guy, who has never caused any health problems to society, have to be burdened by the same laws/regulations as the mega corps who cause many problems?

I grew up on a hog farm and as the years went along, my dad told me, "As more and more people get away from the farm, they have no clue what it takes to run, manage, care, or even what a pig looks like."  It is kinda scary to see what he said years ago coming true today.  Many of the people don't know what it takes to run a farm.  They have no clue as to the number of hours we put in.  Now they want to make our lives even more meager.

I guess when the public is forced into buying $10 tomatoes, $20 salad mix, $5 cucumbers, things may have to change.

Just when the Farmers Markets and local foods movements start to take off, "Nanny" government steps in and squashes it.

I guess if they outlaw gardens, then only outlaws will have gardens!

I don't know where all this ramblings are going, I just have to get it off my chest.  I have spent the last two hours picking green beans.  My back is a little sore and things like this make me wonder if it is all worth it?

Go to : http://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/Guida...

The regs are out on melons , greens and tomatoes. Hundreds of pages.
Be sure to stock up on the   plastic gloves and get the required
clipboard to document your handwashing. Be sure and buy the fencing and
bird net to ensure the wildlife are kept out of your production areas. These things are going to get scarce as producers scramble to comply.

FDA issued these on July 31st, the day after the House passed HR 2749.
They are "advisory" for now, but that's because the FDA has no
authority until the Senate passes HR2749. This time next year we will
either have to comply or quit.

What is troubling already is the "standard of care" being established. I can hear the plaintiff's lawyer representing the customer with diarhea ( that he got in response to his full page newspaper ad) - "and, Sir are you telling us here today that you disregarded all FDA directives and pulled weeds in that tomato patch with your bare hands?"

I'd rather have drought and a squash bug infestation than a regulation.
