I've never grown a large field of corn because I've never had space for it, so I'd be very interested in hearing from non-GMO/organic corn growers about the amount of spraying they have to do. Is it necessary to spray, as Bob said he would have to, 4 to 6 times??? That seems like a huge time and resource drain. What are the organic protocols for corn? Surely it's possible to grow it without so much intervention...?!
On another note, I just want to say that I l o v e this list. I feel like I have a huge group of friendly and helpful colleagues here who are experienced and knowledgeable and insightful and willing to share what they know. I mostly lurk but I always look forward to hearing what you all have to say and I do chime in when my limited experience allows. I really value this community.
Warmly,
Deb

Franklin, When I grew regular sweet corn between June and labor day I have to spray each weekly stage of corn 5 times sometimes 4 sometimes 6 depending on IPM reports. With genetically modified Bt corn I have to spray NOTHING!. Sometimes I get sap beetles which might need one spray with an organic pesticide otherwise I spray nothing. You can't begin to imagine how much time and labor I save for myself not to mention the headache of keeping up with the bugs. Bt corn fields are alive with predator insects and the bees can forage safely as opposed to the dead zones of pesticide treated corn. When you don't have worms in the corn you don't have blackbirds tearing the corn apart either...Bob.

Hello Bob...being a non-farmer I don't quite understand what you mean when you say gm sweetcorn was/is a lifesaver for you. Even though I am a non-farmer I still get ideas from this forum that help me in my home gardening efforts. Franklin

I grow gm sweetcorn. For me its nothing short of a miracle and a life saver. The corn seed is produced from traditional pollination only the parent stock was genetically modified... Bob.

Unfortunately, there is at least as much misinformation on the internet as there is correct information, and this probably can be attributed to both sides of the issue. Those opposed to the use of GMO's are fierce in their stance. Those who understand the technology based on their knowledge and experience are more receptive to their use. I would encourage you to do your own research using reliable information from trustworthy sources.

Hi Folks...tnx to all you folks that have taken the time to explain GMO seeds and plants. It's hard for the average person to figure out what is the truth about some subjects...and this appears to be one of them. Thanks again...Franklin
