It is alot of work, but I feel that you should give it a try. Do some of your crop and compare it to the part of your crop that you don't.  Then you will have information for the future.

I am not a potato expert, but since potatoes from above the seed piece, it can't hurt to give them more loose soil to grow into.

Jay - So hilling an early potato like yukon gold that late pays off
in yield? Frankly, I'm giving upl on seeing friable soil for hilling
this year. Two days of no rain and temps in the 80's and plenty of
sunshine and my soil was pretty much pudding all day today. (someone
tell me: does basil hate too much water? ) Thanks --Allan in WV
