I use 1"x4" slats, with 2"-3" spaces, on 2"x4" frames. A single shelf
about 4' high. Floor below the shelf is similarly slats on 2"x4"s.
2"x4"s are on side so that the lost vertical space is about 3" for
each of the two storage surfaces. The back 2"x4"s (4" dimension
vertical) is lag bolted to the cooler wall. The front 2"x4"s (4"
dimension horizontal) are supported by vertical 2"x4" about 2 box
widths apart. This has proven strong enough to support heavy crops
(peaches) stacked to the ceiling.
