Good advice and cool tips. I have fooled around with
sailboats for a number of years and copper has been used in painting hulls (for
a long time) to stop algae growth. Thanks, Sailor

[mailto:market-farming-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of mcoldiron If you spray a very dilute copper compound on the walls,
mold won't grow. It doesn't take much copper to do the trick.
Copper has been used for hundreds of years to inhibit mold and algae
growth. A few pennies in a fountain will keep it looking clean. I
can put a short piece of shiny copper wire in a jar of sugar water and it can
sit for months without molding or fermenting. Otherwise it only takes
just a few days to get moldy. You can get copper based treatments made to
spray on plants at almost any nursery, or you can mix up your
own using copper sulfate crystals (this would be my choice) used to kill
roots in sewer pipes. Copper Sulfate can be found
in hardware stores in the plumbing section. It's a deep blue in
color. You shouldn't be able to see any color change on the wall after
it's sprayed on, especially if the wall is already blue. Copper in small
amounts is absolutely safe for people and animals (except fish). Copper
water pipes are still used in homes today, not to mention jewelry. Please
note, copper will also kill water plants and fish at low concentrations.
It will kill regular plants in high concentrations, hence the use for getting
roots out of sewer pipes. Also note, copper will inhibit and kill mold
and algae, BUT it won't remove it or take away the stains.
You may need to use some bleach and water to make the foam board look
good. Bleach might negate the effects of the copper, so try to get as
much of it off the foam as you can before using any copper compounds
on. Hope this helps. TxBeeFarmer (Mark) On 3/30/2009 11:48:20 AM, Andy Fellenz (fellenz AT fltg.net) wrote: |
