Alison, Thanks for the heads-up on the drainage issue. I will be
putting up two 50’ mobile tunnels this year and plan on putting a shallow
ditch, sown in white clover, around both double sites. I sure wish I had them
up this year so I wouldn’t be trying to hold all my transplants. It’ll
be a month or so, if it will dry out soon, away from any sales. Thank goodness
for some asparagus beds or I would have nothing to-date. I am expanding my
asparagus production this year, but from seed, so it will be awhile before there
is much production. If I lived closer I would come buy some of your fine
produce. Breck Breck Carden Carden’s Garden From: market-farming-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:market-farming-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Wiediger, Alison Hi Breck! Tunnels help quite a bit in wet weather,
but since we didn't know to install drainage when we built them (not many were
even in existence then and we were just stumbling along in a new way to grow,
kinda on our own), not as much as they could. With proper drainage, they
would be awesome. Unfortunately, retro-fitting them is a labor-intensive
job we haven't yet accomplished. But, even with the challenges, we have
tomatoes over 3 feet tall with large fruits, cherry tomato plants even
larger and closer to sales, cucumbers, swiss chard, broccoli, lettuce, strawberries
and mesclun, and zinnias, cosmos, ageratum, sweet peas snapdragons,
campanula and scented basils to cut for bouquets. A friend of ours also
has snap/snow peas, squash, potatoes close, etc. None of that would be
happening outdoors. Alison From:

close enough to you, that I too can’t catch a break with the rain. I
prefer to whine and carp instead. How much help are your tunnels when the ground is soaked?
Have you trenched around them to lower the water table? Does the lack of wind and
sun work negatively with tunnels? I really enjoyed your book on tunnels. FarmerBreck Breck Carden Carden’s Garden From:

[mailto:market-farming-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Wiediger, Alison Ah, but isn't this one of the big reasons
we all do market growing (besides the big money of course!) ? The
everlasting chase after the perfect season. The more we know, the more we
want/need to know and no season is the same. What a challenge! What
fun! (Well, most of the time. I do wish it would stop raining long
enough to get some crops in the ground) Alison Wiediger, Au Naturel Farm
