I'd also be interested in hearing more about folks experiences with hand held meters. We've been using the colorimetric solutions type testers for checking our potting soil blends. I haven't done a lot of sampling of field soils this way and typically rely on any annual laboratory testing we send out. I've been considering a meter for some time but haven't decided on any particular types. The standard cheapo probe types don't seem to be worth a lick. There are some interesting options for handheld meters but most are most suited to liquid analysis. For soils you'd be required to use a buffering solution and extract. Still these are probably the most accurate and most can be calibrated after each analysis with a standard Ph solution. Hanna Instruments are pretty well know. But like I said I'm just exploring options as well.

Or does no one like the method they use? ;) -- Richard Robinson http://www.nasw.org/users/rrobinson/
