John,
We never use a herbicide sprayer to spray anything other than herbicides. The
recommended practice is to triple rinse and spray your rinse water out on
parts of your field that can take it. That won't work for you since you are
organic. Disposal of the rinse water will be a problem. Do you have a non
crop area that you can spray? The white residue you are seeing could be some
chemical that didn't dissolve completely. You can never be too careful when
dealing with all of that. I would certainly wear chemical resistant gloves. I
wouldn't go so far as to wear a respirator unless it was called for. Do you
know for sure what chemicals were in the tank? You can always get a copy of
the label and see what is required. Gloves, long sleeve shirt, rubber boots
are some of the usual.
I would replace all the hoses, spray tips, etc... but I would still be very
leery of using a herbicide sprayer on anything other than the weeds. If you
don't get it clean enough you could potentially kill everything you are
trying to grow.
