It was probably positive ground. Either way you hook it up you need to polarize the generator before starting - google 'polarize generator'.
It will be less work to get the 6 volt system working correctly, then you won't need to think about a 12 v conversion. Or you can save time and sell it to me cheap :0)

Doe the OEM Allis G have a negative or positive ground?
To do a 12v conversion. . . the coil, battery, generator need to be
replaced. . . correct?
