We have been using winter rye for a number of years. It does a great job when it is wet like this year to prevent washing . Planting in the fall will get a lot of early growth and it really helps with the wind on the new transplants. I use a 4' tiller to cut strips to lay the mulch down for the 3' mulch. Works good for us. When the rye really gets to big to til under I mow it first then till my mulch strips. I started using the strip method because of the high winds we have in the early spring, one thing about our area you can be assured that the wind will blow 25 to 30 every day in the spring, and this is really hard on new transplant.
