Maury,
What is a nitrogen shipping container and how do you locate them? Thanks. -John

Karen,
I have a 20 foot nitrogen shipping container I use for a cooler. They dont come any cheaper or more insulated. I added a compressor and a bulkhead and used the back half as a freezer and the front half as a cooler (a fan in the bulkhead thermostatically controlled for cooling the front). The electric bill is minimal. I wouldnt be without it.

Has anyone any experience with/knowledge about converting/using an insulated 20' shipping container as a produce cooler? I need to ship a number of large items from U.S. to Dominica and am wondering if it makes sense to purchase a used insulated container to ship in, then convert it here to propane (or solar???), sectioned into several different spaces that could be kept at different temperatures.
We are in the midst of our busiest season here. Dry season to follow, then too wet, so despite year round work, annual farm income must largely be gained from about 4-5 months production. At least that's what past weather experience has shown. The changing weather pattern makes projections so much iffier than usual.
Thanks so much to all of you for all the wisdom and experience and even conjecture shared on the list.
All best wishes,
Karen

I was reading with interest the discussion on post harvest cooling. As I'm not as handy as some of you, I was wondering what you think about this --

Typically, around Texas, farmers buy MUCH rougher walkins. BUT,
several times the size and 1/3 - 1/2 the price.
I also see these on sale for much cheaper. Opinions?

A much more attractive deal if it fits your needs. This makes no
sense, though:
During the move it was unfortunately unplugged for about two weeks, so
it will need to be recharged with coolant.
